Mali born singer/songwriter Boubacar Traoré first brought his blend of kassonké (a traditional Mali style), Arabic music and American blues to the world in the 1960's, when the freshly independent country boosted him into the limelight with numerous performances and radio spots. No recordings were made, however, and as the next decade dawned Traoré's popularity faded. Relocating to Paris after the death of his wife, he was working on construction when Stern's Africa discovered a tape of one of his radio performances. Two CDs and several tours of Europe and the States later, Traoré is finally getting the recognition he deserves.

Malian Pop Queen Niany Diabate first came to light with the Super Rail Band of Bamako in 1979, and she remains one of the most respected musicians on the Malinke pop scene.
