In 1967, Daevid Allen was on tour with
Soft Machine. The band went to the UK, but due to a Visa problem, Allen was forced to remain in France. He hooked up with professor Gilli Smyth, and the first configuration of
Gong was formed. Their now legendary debut "Camembert Electrique" was released on Virgin in 1971, but over the next few years the founding members gradually jumped ship and the band deteriorated.
The Gong of 2009 is a reformed version, however, featuring founders Allen and Smyth, their son Orlando (sometimes) and Kawabata Makoto.
