Tinariwen

Written 30 January

Tinariwen, Demba Tandia

Formed in a Tuareg refugee camp in the late 70's, Tinariwen are more than a band - they're a family, a cultural movement, a political force. Their thirty-odd year musical and physical journey has been intense - from the refugee camps of Algeria to the stages of the western world via Ghadaffi's desert army, rebellion through music and the six month Touareg/Mali conflict. Sung in Tamasheq, their songs blend blues and rock with traditional Touareg music.
