LA COQUILLE ET LE CLERGYMAN
(1927) / 40'/ 35 mm / b&w / silent

Showing presented by Patrick de Haas.

French film director and film theorist Germaine Dulac made her first film Les Soeurs enemies in 1915. In 1927, she directed La Coquille et le Clergyman (The Seashell and the Clergyman), based on a scenario by Antonin Artaud. The film was credited as the first surrealist film, released shortly before Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. Known for her obscure camera angles and perspectives she expresses the frustrations and sexual fantasies of a young priest.
