CONCERT

Giant Sand

Written 30 January

Wednesday 26 November, 00:00
Point Ephémère, 75010 [map]
Giand Sand

Arizona rock stalwarts Giant Sand has featured among it's ranks members of Calexico, Green on Red and The Go-Go's as well as PJ Harvey, Neko Case... the pedigree is clear. Originally formed as Giant Sandworms (a Dune reference) in the mid 70s, band leader Howe Gelb has run a pretty tight ship - the sort of ship that ocassionally throws almost everyone overboard and finds a new crew - and remains the figurehead of what is essentially a one man band with a revolving supporting cast. "Valley of Rain" (1985) was the first actual Giant Sand, and now 28 (yes, 28) albums later the latest collection "Provisions" is as oddball as any previous. An elaborate blend of firelight desert songs and close-miked alt-poetry, the tracks on "Provisions" are perfectly suited to this intimate space on the Canal.
