Russian cinema has held two common threads since it's inception: lyricism and musicality of movement on the one hand and plastic elaboration of the image on the other hand. In the last fifteen years, these traits have shown themselves particularly forcefully in non-fiction cinematic works from Russia, such as those here today. The fresh observational tactics found in this documentary style make for poetic and vital films, where time itself becomes the subject. Here's a quick overview of what's showing today:
14h30 - Tishe! (Viktor Kossakovsky, 2003, 1h20)
For a year the director filmed according to serendipity whatever happened under his windows in St Petersburg, on a street continuously being restored for the 300th anniversary celebrations of the town.
16h30 - Artel (Sergey Loznitsa, 2006, 30 mn)
The fishermen of the white sea dig out their holes into the ice where they throw their nets. The sky hangs like a lid over the obscure silhouettes working in silence. The work takes on the form of a choreographed piece of work.
17h00 - L’usine (Sergey Loznitsam, 2004, 30 mn)
A day in a factory in Russia. Men and women work the machines and handle the material. The human gestures and the mechanical movements respond to one another in a unique harmony.
