Joint exhibition from Musée du Montparnasse and la Galerie Les Singuliers showing works by Chilian avant-garde artists
Luis Vargas Rosas,
Roberto Matta et
Mario Murua. In 1923, Luis Vargas Rosas founded le Grupo Montparnasse in Santiago in Chilli, bringing together Chilean artists who spent time in the artistic milieu of Montparnasse in Paris. Several years later he founded l’Académie Libre where Roberto Matta became one of his young pupils. Matta soon became one of the emblematic figures of surrealism. Matta met Mario Murua in London, in 1976 and in 1982 Murua created the group Magie-Image, an artistic collective including Magie Cogollo, Aresti, Kaminer, Zarate and Cuevas who explored the redemption of south-American roots and original forms, fighting against the “graphic dictatorship” of formal and official European art.
