Frédéric Sanchez presents his second solo show at the gallery, "Une utile illusion" ("A useful illusion"). Frédéric Sanchez creates installations wherein sound is the unique material. Each of his works is the continuation of the previous one. Thus, Une utile illusion follows Castles in the air presented at the gallery in 2007.
Each work consists of a set of recordings made by the artist, creating a sonorous space where the visitor is both a spectator and an actor. As usual with Frédéric Sanchez, it is necessary to enter the installation space through a labyrinth (like in the Louvre), or through a door, marking the boundary of a closed place. Once inside, the physical place provides room for a mental place, with sounds creating that space : a clock, voices, sounds specific to different places (an empty or inhabited place, an opened or closed place…) and allows the visitor to appropriate the work. Une utile illusion is a set of sound sculptures, wherein a tree is a forest, and a column a castle.
Based on Maurice Maeterlinck's plays, the artist reveals a whole universe where time keeps changing the landscape, where darkness reveals and dazzles as much as light. The voice, that of the artist, is reciting stage directions, scenes, fragments, frequencies which specify the movements of the characters, the entries, the exits and the gestures. The use of recurring motives and the repetitions of common words echo one another, come to a confrontation anchored in time, acquire an internal rhythm. It is in to this timeless and subjective space that the visitor is invited.
