The cinema of
Paul Sharits, major figure of experimental cinema of the 1960s- 1970s, was and remains still difficult to understand; the principles remaining as distant as possible from the production and reception of commercial cinema.
« At the risk of appearing immodest …, I have the feeling of working on a totally new concept of cinema. Traditionally, “abstract films” … are not more cinematic than the narrative-dramatic films that compress literature and theatre onto a two dimensional screen. I want to abandon imitation and illusion and enter directly into the higher drama: the two-dimensional strips of celluloid; photograms taken individually; perforation and emulsion; projector operations; the screen itself… in this cinematic drama, the light is energy rather than a tool of representation of non-filmic objects; the light, like energy, is emitted to create objects, shapes and textures.. one can generate virtual shapes, create a real movement (rather than illustrate it), build a real colour space (rather than depict it) and be part of a real time (immediate presence).” Paul Sharits
