Tôei was the youngest of the six major Japanese cinema studios. However in less than ten years it became an empire rivalling that of Hollywood under the guidance of Hiroshi Ôkawa who took a gamble in re-launching jidaigeki (samurai films), a genre which had fallen practically into obsolescence since it was banned; ts attributes being that of unbridled loyalty to master, code of honour, and sword combats.
The success is based on post war heroes - Chiezô Kataoka, Utaemon Ichikawa, Ryûnosuke Tsukigata, Ryûtarô Ôtomo – and new stars of the genre – Kinnosuke Nakamura, and Hashizô Ôkawa. The latter also created a new genre, yakuzas films, of whose originality is in his carrying over the codes of jidaigeki into modern society. See the website for a full programme of films shown during this film retrospective.
