On Gengis Khan the road

The path from Mongolia to China unwinds on the road of the great Khans between the Gobi Desert to the South and the Mountains of the Altai to the West. In that country the oral transmission of traditions is still strong with many active performers. Voice has a central place, because of the multiplicity of techniques and the richness and diversity of repertoires. Depending on the ethnic group, the specialities differ; the performance of diphonic singing, xöömij, is quite frequently attributed to the region of the Altai for example.

Between valleys, mountains, rivers and lakes, the nomadic lifestyle, in harmony with nature, has influenced the creation of a music which testifies to the history of a whole people. JC
