CONCERT

Matthias Schriefl's Shreefpunk

Written 30 January

Tuesday 06 January, 20:00
Cité de la Musique, 75019 [map]

Born in 1981 in the Allgäu region of southern Germany, Matthias Schriefl was a bit of a prodigy. He won the Young Musician award aged 11, became the youngest ever Bavarian State Jazz Orchestra member at 15, and won the national Jugend Jazzt award at 18. Now 26, he has gone on to win acclaim in his adult life as a composer, conductor, improvisor and soloist.

Often held out as proof of the vitality of German new jazz, Schriefl's new project Shreefpunk blends influences from within the jazz world with other, more diverse aspects such as his friends untidy flat, the ozone layer and the bassist's sister's hair. As a live event, Shreefpunk are getting a reputation for unforgettable stage events, and the newly added string section can only enhance this. Well worth a look.
