Akira Kurosawa

Written 30 January

Petit Palais, 75008 [map]

Akira Kurosawa, who died in 1998, is universally known as one of the most prominent filmmakers of the second half of the twentieth century. Slightly less known, however, is the designer. Thanks to an unprecedented retrospective, the Petit Palais here reveals to the public this hidden side to the well know director.

Kurosawa's drawings can be seen as preparatory work for the realization of his films. However, designed as independent works, they are accessible to all; not just those who have seen his movies. These strong, expressionist drawings express Kurosawa's character, his Japanese roots and his admiration of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Rouault and Chagall.
