Influential photojournalist Erich Salomon began his career at the age of 42, in 1928. The son of a wealthy Berlin banker, he mixed in all the right circles to photograph the rich and famous of the era, with or without their complicity. The use of modern, small-build cameras allowed him to document usually restricted areas of society, and he earnt the title "King of the indiscreet".

Salomon moved to the Netherlands in 1933 when the Nazis seized power, and after denouncing the war was sent to Auschwitz where he died in 1944. His output constitutes one of the largest interwar bodies of photographic work in the world.
