Carlos Saura's new film Fados uses poetry, image and sound to track the evolution of this fine Lisbon tradition. The last six years has seen significant changes to the art, with modern interpreters such as
Mariza,
Carlos de Carmo and Cuca Roseta forwarding the cause internationally, and Brazilian artists such as Chico Buareque adding new slants.
The simplicity of "Fados" is the key to it's success: the music is allowed to shine from the simple beauty of the settings, and (purists will be happy to hear) Saura retains the essence of Fado, despite the progressive elements of the film.
