Freetime (Toshiki Okada)

Written 22 February

Le 104, 75019 [map]

Toshiki Okada's performances give voice to the people the Japanese press call "the lost generation": 25-35 year olds plagued by insecurity, who have invented a new language to address their growing lack of reference in their society. Dialogue is formed of "super-real" verbal Japanese, abbreviated sentences that are little more than a succession of conjunctions without verbalized subjects, like fragments of private conversations.

It's about movement, too: the performances are characterized by unique body language that has drawn the attention of the contemporary dance world.

With his latest creation "Freetime", Okada extends the thinking of his play "Enjoy". It's a reflection on work and freedom, voiced through the unemployed youth of Japan.
