Mequitta Ahuja

Galerie Nathalie Obadia presents the first personal exhibition from Mequitta Ahuja in Europe. The work of American Ahuja is made up exclusively of self portraits and coloured compositions that waver between landscape and abstraction. Mixing colours and multiple ethnic identities, in relation with her own mixed origins (her father is Indian and her mother is Afro-American), on textured canvases, the artist speaks of “Automythography” to describe the context of her work. Each self portrait begins with a performance by the artist in front of the camera’s lens after having carefully composed her pose and chosen her clothes. Ahuja combines personal mythology, reality and fantasy to create an interesting aesthetic.
