Théâtre des opérations is the first personal exhibition of artist Djamel Kokene at the Anne de Villepoix gallery. Made up of about a dozen recent works, Kokene submerges us into a universe where we waver between the world and a way out of it, questioning social and urban revolt, authority figures, common space and individual belief.

Hank Willis Thomas, American artist, has chosen two advertisements per year since 1968, the death of Martin Luther King symbolising for him the entry of the Afro-American community in the normalisation of society, and also as the end of a difficult battle for the recognition of civil rights. His processes consist in eliminating all writing appearing in original publicity and presenting an image to demonstrate that, according to him, “publicity doesn’t stigmatise a product, that’s the generalisation in which it is held”. His recent work with neon lights explores again this double language by restructuring illuminated slogans and complicating the commercial language to make it evocative and ambiguous.
