Padmini Chettur

Padmini Chettur is Indian, but the contemporary choreographic approach she offers is so disturbingly refined that it seems a long way from her country’s traditional dances. In her new creation, Beautiful Thing 1, Padmini Chettur talks about construction, in space as well as in time, and sees her interpreters as “ the discrete segments of a unique mathematical equation”.

The work, in which the dancers took an active part, focuses on specific body parts- right shoulder, left hip… - drawing a real choreographic landscape which uses a narrative framework by writer Vivek Narayanan. In 1994, Padmini Chettur considered body movements as self-expression, she later tried to dance to “change the world”. Today, through movement, she discovers the beauty of simple things again.
