Having settled on the west coast in the 60s,
Bruce Conner (1933-2008) became a central figure of the American avant-garde. He first concentrated his efforts on sculpture-recycling clothes, furniture and accessories in his often morbid installations- before turning to film which he approached through “found footage”. He uses images taken from B movies, company videos, public service announcements, popular music footage to create a virtuoso montage and often thought provoking and intelligent work of a modern America.
Breakaway
Film based on the singer and choreographer
Toni Basil (Antonia Christina Basilotta) with music from Ed Cobb.
Mongoloid
« Mongoloid he was a mongoloid, happier than you and me.
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid, and it determined what he could see.
Mongoloid he was a mongoloid, one chromosome too many.
And he wore a hat, and he had a job.
And he brought home the bacon so that no one knew. »
Conner’s short film produced for the music of
Devo.
America Is Waiting
