Gregory Maqoma

Gregory Maqoma created the Vuyani Dance Theatre in 1999, and is a great figure of the young generation of South African choreographers. This is his first production at the Théâtre de la Ville.

“How does one know where one comes from? How does one confront oneself?”, Gregory Maqoma asks in an imaginary dialogue. With lithe, sharp, and accurate movements, this dancer sows memories and identity questions at the burning heart of “his” History. For Beautiful me, he asked three choreographers who blend tradition with contemporary creation to write dance sequences for him: Vincent Mantsoe, his childhood partner in Soweto, Faustin Linyekula, a Congolese, and Akram Khan, of Indian origin. Gregory Maqoma used these sequences to compose a solo he mixed with imaginary conversations in English and in Xhosa. On stage with four musicians who play the violin, the cello, the drums and the Indian harp, he dances under the caress of the words and notes, a rhythmic flow springing from his body, ranging from brisk hip swaying to a form of chiselled calligraphy. It is the echo of a man who goes through his past so as to be able to live in the present.
