Jan Fabre

Not only is Jan Fabre capable of the most ample stage displays (a recent example was L’Orgie de la Tolérance An Orgy of Tolerance), he has also become a master in the conception of tailor-made solos for exceptionally talented performers, whether actors (Els Deceukelier, Dirk Roothhooft…) or dancers (Erna Omarsdottir, Wim Vandekeybus…). Ivana Jozic - a new Muse in Jan Fabre’s artistic pantheon - had already been part of L’Ange de la Mort The Angel of Death, a video performance in which she features as a fallen angel interviewing William Forsythe. In Fabre’s deeply moving piece Another Sleepy Dusty Delta Day, she is alone on a stage darkened by coal heaps, where miniature trains constantly run, and doves in their cages observe the scene from above. Using a country music song, Ode to Billie Joe, in which Bobbie Gentry tells the story of a young man who commits suicide by jumping from a bridge, Jan Fabre has coined a text in the form of a letter from a man to his beloved; it’s “a manifesto in favour of one’s freedom when facing death”. Ivana Jozic takes full possession of it, and with unrivalled intensity.
