CONCERT

Panico

Written 30 January

Wednesday 21 July, 19:30
L'International, 75011 [map]
Panico, Maestro

Post punk disco-not-disco outfit Panico spent a long time in the shade of the Chilean underground before making their first international breakthrough in France, where they continue to enjoy their greatest exposure. Now signed to Tigersushi, the heavy riffing, bass driven sound of this high energy five piece is finally finding its sonic home with production work from Versatile heavyweight Joakim and Supercollider force Cristian Vogel. Think ESG, Gang Gang Dance, Os Mutantes, DFA, and you're close. Check out this awesome exclusive DJ mix by Panico's DJ Squatt to see what we mean.

We caught up with Panico resident DJ Squatt...

TP Why Paris?
SQ "Because a lot of us speak french or a little, and Edouardo , Caroline , Seba and me knew paris before. The other reason is the contract with the label "St George" for the TELEPATIC album (2001)."

TP Riots, war, Sarkozy - in your opinion, how has the Parisian scene reacted to the changes of the last few years?
SQ "The night life changed, it's more "grannynight"... when we arrived it was more wild. And the parisian scene the same - personally I'm not a fan of sleepy bands but you've great band like Poni Hoaxs, Joakim, Versatile DJ Live, Flairs, Zombiezombie..."

TP What are the key influences on Panico's sound?
SQ "The vision, the sound that we listened to before, I liked cumbia, and 60's latin, garage, rock from Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Mexico. Basically all the latin vintage music! And the rest of the sounds of the planet... A mix betwen the wild energy of rock, postpunk, fat bass, mixed with trippy latin!"

TP Are there any elements of your style that you consider to be Chilean?
SQ "For me percusion (Timbales), lyrics, and pisco sour drink!"

TP What's on the cards in the near future for Panico?
SQ "I see a big Panico apocalypse, "san expedido" can save the planet because we continue to put the energy and the sound everywhere that we can!"

TP What's Panico's favourite drink?
SQ "Pisco sour and Tequila (100 percent agave). But I drink everything, only thing I don't drink is Gin because I turn crazy, no control of brain or body!"

TP Does Panico have any pets?
SQ "A few years I had a "little poodle", a female, she was really "cachonda" (in spanish "cachonda" = hot, loves sex with girls or boys) she died in 2003, she reposes in Santiago, Chile!"

Also on the bill tonight: another Tigersushi no-wave band, Franco-Scottish trio Maestro.
