Much applauded in his native country (he won both best album and best song in the IMA awards in 2004),
Mugison is still chipping away at the international thing. Somewhere between the open-spaces reflection of Fleet Foxes and the unhinged flight-paths of Beck at his most wacked out, Mugison's award winning
"Mugimama Is This Monkey Music?" eventually found a home on Mike Patton's
Ipecac label.
Icelandic band
Hjaltalin are a quirky (sorry, it's probably illegal to apply that word to Icelandic music post-Bjork) indie nine piece with instrumentation ranging from the usual guitar/bass stuff to clarinet, strings and bassoon. Their intricate arrangements, naive harmonic content and rhythmic complexity makes for familiar yet genuinely new and exciting music. Check their new album "Sleepdrunk Seasons" to get an idea of their style - a sort of acoustic, semi-orchestral
Hot Chip. Maybe.
Supporting tonight are emotive-electronic outfit
sayCeT, whose cinematic soundscapes are enhanced by VJ Zita Cochet's abstract visuals.
