Jeremy Deller’s piece, Acid Brass (1997) invites England's most prestigious traditional brass band, Manchester’s Fairey Band, to play a selection of acid house scores. The project is based on fusing the music of a traditional brass band with acid house and Detroit techno.
The world famous Fairey band were founded in 1937 from a group of employees at the Fairey Aviation works in Stockport. The band became known as the Williams Fairey Band when Fairey Engineering was taken over by Williams Holdings in 1986. Since then the band has become one of the world’s leading and most famous brass bands. Acid Brass began in 1997 as a collaboration between Deller and the Stockport-based Fairey Brass Band. Deller saw a connection between the two apparently disparate genres, viewing them as "two authentic forms of folk art rooted in specific communities" the project is therefore based on a fusion of brass band with acid house and Detroit techno.
The original Acid Brass album of 1997 was released on the Blast First label and featured versions of dance classics such as A Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray", Rhythm Is Rhythm's "Strings Of Life" and 808 State's "Pacific 202".
