Dressed like lords and holding their shoes in their hands as if they were a precious thing, the members of the Phuphuma Love Minus choir walk in procession on the stage, which is empty, except for a long roll of white paper on which video images of Johannesburg are projected. They perform an a capella whilst taking dance steps on tiptoe and stamping about on the stage, which is how “isicathamiya” choir translates - to walk softly, an urban art in the real sense of the word, born at the beginning of the 20th century when the Zulu communities started to emigrate to the cities.
Robyn Orlin puts this at the heart of her latest creation and, to the songs about everyday life, she adds the colourful performance of two swankers and an opera singer.
