The
D.I.R.T.Y. crew hit the Social Club once again in very fine company - house producer
Tensnake (whose forthcoming mix of
Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar" is set to explode worldwide in the next few weeks), master of the cheeky edit
Pilooski and DFA related psyche-pop-house duo
Mock and Toof. The latter's debut album "Tuning Echoes" came out this year on their own label,
Tiny Sticks - an insanely well informed cultural mash of psychedia, 80's pop, deep house and post-punk which no genuine music lover can resist.
We caught up with Mock and Toof's Nick Woolfson with a few questions about the record, this gig and their musical life in general...
TP: Have you played in France much? How do you find the Parisian scene?
NW: We have Dj’ed in Paris a few times before & have always found the people to be really receptive and up for a good time. As an outsider it’s hard to have an informed opinion of the Parisian scene generally, but the nights we have attended always have strong line-ups, great DJs and some interesting personalities.
TP: How live is your live show?
NW: It’s semi-live. One of us is triggering & manipulating samples and the other is playing keys live over the top. For us it’s a stepping stone into doing a full live show with other additional musicians maybe next year.
TP: "Tuning Echoes" has a pretty original sound to it - what went into the record, influence-wise?
NW: All of the best bits from all the records we have listened to loved over the years went into the record. These influences are often unspoken & generally manifest themselves subconsciously. The album’s originality comes from our very eclectic tastes and the fact that we weren’t chasing a particular sound or scene.
TP: What are your non-musical influences? film, literature, visual art etc.
NW: Graphic design, cinema, motor-bikes, contemporary art & books…. It’s important to step away from music, find out about people & their work & soak it all up.
TP: How do your remix projects inform your own productions, if at all?
NW: They are completely separate. With ‘Tuning Echoes’ we made a conscious decision to step away from the dance floor & the type of production we were doing for remixes. We haven’t done many mixes in the last year, so it will be interesting to see if the album will have an influence on future remixes.
TP: What's coming up for mock & toof, recording and gig-wise?
NW: We are releasing the third & final single, ‘Norman’s Eyes’, from ‘Tuning Echoes’ later this month & after that we will throw ourselves into the next album…we already have a number of demos that we are working on. In terms of gigs we are discussing mini-tours of the US & Australia at the moment.
TP: What's your favourite drink?
NW: Une lemonade et un café.
TP: Do you have any pets?
NW: Two guinea-pigs.
