Intolerance, considered a masterpiece of the silent era, was made in 1916 by the American D.W.Griffith. The film consists of four distinct but parallel stories that demonstrate mankind's intolerance during four different ages in world history. The film and its unorthodox editing were enormously influential, particularly among European and Soviet filmmakers. It was made in response to critics who protested against Griffith's previous film, The Birth of a Nation, for its overt racist content, characterizing racism as people's "intolerance" of other people's views. The showing tonight is a high definition restoration of the film with the musical composition of A. Duhamel and P. Jansen.
