The artistic genre of still life was formerly called Vanitas, Latin for "vanity", because it was thought appropriate for each such painting to include some kind of symbol of mortality in each picture. This sobering exhibition explores this art form.
Jean-Christophe Ballot’s work questions spirituality and takes a meditative approach “My photographs are at the same time a search for justice and sobriety, silence and contemplation."
Stéphane Belzère explores anatomical fragments from a collection of preserves from the museum of natural history.
Valérie Delarue reviews the artistic genre of still life (memento mori). Her work is presented amongst the plates of pomp and 18th century crockery. Bones, skin, intestines and veins. The carnage displayed evokes the seductive materiality of things and their inevitable deterioration.
“When I take the imprint of a flower or a skull with a piece of paper it’s initially a design. Skulls of which I take an imprint were once brains, people... Imagine Hamlet giving his monologue whilst holding a paper skull. Double irony on the fragility, impermanence and futility of life.” (Kevin Touratier)
