Sophie Ristelhueber

Written 30 January

Tuesday 27 January, 19:00
Jeu de Paume (Concorde), 75008 [map]

Sophie Ristelhueber was born in 1949 and lives in Paris where she was a journalist before devoting herself to photography. For over 20 years her work has been a reflection on territory and its history. Through her unique approach, she highlights ruins and traces of devastation left by man in the wake of war. Far from classic photo reportage, she creates images taken directly from what she experiences, without manipulation in the final print, resulting in installations far removed from traditional views of the world. Her work highlights the impact made by a war torn world by visibly showing scars and wounds on bodies and landscapes. In the first large exhibition of the artist in France, le Jeu de Paume presents, amongst her other work, “Beyrouth”, “Vukaines”, “Fait”, “Eleven Blowups”.. as well as two of her films, one of which has been created expecially for the exhibition.

This evening’s conference on the work of Sophie Ristelhueber is presented by Philippe Dagen, writer, art critic and professor of history of contemporary art at the Sorbonne.
