To celebrate Fifty Years (the title of the book by David Vaughan about
Merce Cunningham), the Théâtre de la Ville and the Paris Autumn Festival offer a fantastic collection of masterpieces. From the oldest piece Antic Meet (1958), which marked Cunningham’s first visit to France and his irreverent farewell to
Martha Graham, to the most recent and very pop-inspired Pond Way "a ballet of transient lives" with music by
Brian Eno and a stage set by
Roy Lichtenstein (1998), the first programme also presents the gem Second Hand, which was originally composed from music by
Erik Satie, but which
John Cage had to adapt into a “cheap imitation” because its copyright was not granted.
