Sam Amidon does what folk music does best - takes traditional music forms and ideas (mostly, in his case, from the Appalachian side of things) and adapts them for the current moment, the current step in musical tradition. What makes these songs interesting is the fact that his source material, the true old-time stuff, is quite different to his current musical context - there are some real twists and extended musical shaping required to get from A to B.
