Singer/songwriter,
Arab Strap founder and
Christmas number 1 bidder (he was robbed)
Malcolm Middleton has had a productive and interesting last decade in the public eye. Having dallied with major labels, recorded a number of influential indie-folk albums (check "
Philophobia") and splintered off some critically acclaimed solo projects (see his 2005 solo record "
Into The Woods"), his output has culminated in the recently toured album "
Sleight of Heart", an bleak existentialist essay sung to a cheerful tune.
Ex-
Galaxy 500 duo Damon & Naomi have been pushing slowly forward since the band split, and have since put out some genuinely beautiful folk-rock moments. The Kramer-produced "Wonderful World of Damon and Naomi" (1995, Sub Pop) ushered them back towards the stage, and subsequent collaborations with Ghost have widened their audience considerably. Their last two albums ("
Within These Walls" and "
The Earth Is Blue", both released on their own label 20/20/20) are amongst their finest work, all wide-screen arrangements and lush textures, gentle folk and ethereal ballads.
Also on stage this evening: the ecstatic, shamnistic vocal-chord-wrenching performance of Arrington de Dionyso; the boozy road movie blues of Jason Edwards; and regular feature on these pages
The Wave Pictures.
