Selected for the Photographic Portrait Prize 2006 at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Kirill Smolyakov is a young photographer, originally born in Novopolotsk, Belarus. His photographic collection “return to the unknown” reflects, with melancholic realism, his birth place and daily life he has found again after 3 years spent in the west.

His friends and the objects imported from the West, evolve in a landscape that recalls the Soviet era, as if time had stopped.

“At the age of 16, I was sent to the UK by my parents to study for a business degree...I didn't return to Belarus for three years. I was a man without country and without family. I felt that I’d lost my roots but I can’t say I suffered too much, I knew my family and my nearest and dearest were there for me. Last summer, I returned to my country and I discovered that I didn’t belong anymore; I had returned to the unknown. Now I understand that that had been my decision. I have photographed people and places which are both close to me but at the same time today seem so distant. “ Kirill Smolyakov.
