Lawrence Weiner, born in the Bronx in 1942, lives and works in New York. He is a major figure of American conceptual art. His most famous pieces often take the form of typographic text, in the form of statement written on walls. He is the author of the famous 1968 Declaration of intent "1. The artist may construct the piece. 2. The piece may be fabricated. 3. The piece need not be built. Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership." He has produced work for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art as well as “As Far As The Eye Can See” at K21 in Dusseldorf, a 40 year retrospective of his work.
The following programme will be presented by Lawrence Weiner and followed by a discussion with the artist:
Hearts and Helicopters, 1999-2000 - 52'. A three-part series featuring important new works that continue the themes of role- and game-playing, and the use of language.
Water in Milk Exists, 2008 - 23' / over 18s. In cooperation with the Swiss Institute, Lawrence Weiner teamed up with cinematographer Kiki Allgeier to realize Water in Milk Exists, a fresh skin flick that challenges both artistic and pornographic conventions.
Liberté et contraintes, 2006 - 5'. LIBERTÉ ET CONTRAINTES is a video filmed and edited by Lawrence Weiner where language plays a fundamental role.
