The last day to catch this retrospective of Wim Wenders. Today is The American friend, a film based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel Ripley’s game. Bruno Ganz plays a picture framer who believes he is dying from a blood disease. Ripley (Dennis Hopper) makes the acquaintance of Jonathon and decides to use the latter’s illness to his advantage. Ripley introduces him to a gangster who proposes to Jonathon to become an assassin in order to leave a legacy of money for his family, seeing as he doesn’t have long to live. Things become complicated when Ripley, who had originally intended Jonathon to do all his dirty work for him, becomes close to Jonathon. The film, today a cult film, won the German Critics Prize in 1977 and brought Wenders to the attention of Francis Ford Coppola who invited him over to the US to shoot Hammett, a series about the mystery novel writer Dashiell Hammett.
