Giorgia Fiorio is a rare thing amongst photographers - one who has chosen to work on long term projects in a documentary fashion rather than capture spectacles for immediate results. Her projects span several years, gradually developing an area of knowledge, slowly questioning her own approaches and attitudes to her subject and building a vast, detailed body of objective and subjective material. She seeks to deepen an understanding of a terrain rather than exploit and exhaust it - the spirit of this attitude is reflected in the name of the exhibition: "The Gift".

Finished in 2008, Fiorio's study of human communities, ritual practices and pilgrimages and celebrations covers an exhaustive list of countries, traditions, religions and beliefs; from collective baptisms in Ethiopia to the "tattoo-monks" of Thailand, via traditional Andean stone battles to spill blood in honour of the Earth.

The depth and sympathy of Fiornio's documentation of these communities and rituals is both objective and subjective, reflective and documentary, and makes for a spell-binding afternoon's viewing.
