Abderrahim Souiri, Thami al-Harrâq

Abderrahim Souiri was born in Essaouira in 1957. Orphaned at the age of twelve, he moved to Casablanca with his older brother where he later refused higher education in order to share family responsibilities with him. He met Hadj Abdelkrim Raïs in 1982 and they performed together that year, in Fez. Souiri has since gone on to be regarded as the statesman of the Moroccan musical tradition he made popular.

Born in 1959 in Tetouan, Al-Thami Harrak is a disciple of Harrâqiyya, and growing up in that environment received his education in a wide range of musical instruments. Harrâqiyyacounts amongst its disciples numerous great masters such as singing Sufi maestro Abdessâdaq Chekâra and Mohammed Larbi Temsamani. A great success at the festival of Essaouira alongside Moroccan singer Haim Mlouk, Al-Thami Harrak has also performed several times at the Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, and at the Cairo Opera.
