Far from the stereotypical carnival and bossa nova images that may come to mind when thinking about Brazil, Membros shows a different country, anchored in a reality made up of violence and hope. Taís Vieira, choreographer and Paulo Azevedo, teacher and political sciences academic have brought together ten or so young people from Macaé , a small town in Brazil with a record number of homicides, with no formal dance training. The company blend a mix of hip hop, video, djing and attitude to produce the second part of a trilogy which brings a universal language of dance to audiences and interprets the everyday brutality of the street. The power of Membros, far from being depressing, is a therapeutic event. As the two founders say “We can’t heal the sufferings in the world, so we’ve decided to dance them”.
