Gang Gang Dance and Toy Fight

NYC envelope-pushers Gang Gang Dance make beat-heavy, twisted pop. They're often spoken of in the same sentence as Animal Collective and Black Dice, but their music has a great deal more rhythmic energy and compulsive forward motion - they're sound has been referred to as "neo-tribal" for their insistent Afro-rhythmic drive. With members drawn from New York outfits Angel Blood, Actress and Ssab Songs, the pedigree is high and the reputation gained over the last couple of years has been flawless, earning them deals with Social Registry and Warp. Think of the melodic and harmonic prowess of Talking Heads mixed with the volatile nature of someone like Cornelius, add a little high-energy ESG style disco-not-disco and you're getting close.

Supporting this evening: Paris-based collective Toy Fight, whose concise, uplifting and naïve melodic pop was rediscovered by the City Slang label after the band's breakup, initiating the reformation of the collective into its current form. This is feel-good indiepop at its best - file next to Belle & Sebastian and Herman Dune.
