This cycle presents a selection of short films on Paris from the 20s to the 50s, including a varied selection of documentaries, fiction and avant-garde film, masterpieces, amateur film and rarely seen footage provided by filmmakers both at home in Paris and further afield. Many of the images have been borrowed from the Archives françaises du film du Centre national de la cinématographie and from the Forum des Images.
Paris-Express ou Souvenirs de Paris by Marcel Duhamel, Pierre et Jacques Prévert, 1928.
In 1928, three friends decided to make a film on Paris. Marcel Duhamel, Jacques et Pierre Prévert produced Souvenir de Paris, later known as Paris-Express ou Souvenirs de Paris. We follow the camera through the Opera quartier, along canal Ourcq, the Champs-Élysées to quai d’Austerlitz. A sequence on le pont de Crimée and le bistrot Au Château Tremblant also became the inspiration for Jacques Prévert's film Jenny, directed by Marcel Carné. This is a chance to see the beauty of Paris in the 20s and also serves as a historical document of its time.
Rien que les heures by Alberto Cavalcanti, 1926.
The first film by the Brazilian Avant-garde filmmaker and future pillar of the British school of documentary makers, Alberto Cavalcanti. Rien que les heures was the first of the "city symphony" films. It was followed by Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt (Berlin: Symphony of a Great City) (1927, Walter Ruttmann), Chelovek's kinoapparatom (The Man with a Movie Camera) (Moscow, 1929, Dziga Vertov), and Regen (Rain) (Amsterdam, 1929, Joris Ivens). This genre grew out of the interest of 1920s avant-garde filmmakers in the interrelationship between space and time. The film explores the many facets of the capital in the course of one day, from pre-dawn to night. The film looks ahead to the poetic realism of the 1930s and the films of Jacques Prévert and Marcel Carné.
