Michael Landy, born in London, is one of the Young British Artists. Landy's first major solo piece was Market (1990), an installation made up of empty market stalls. Like much of his later work, it was intended as a comment on consumerism and society. His first major project, Market 1990, comprised a large scale assembly of generic market-stall stands, artificial grass and plastic bread crates in a vast disused industrial space in south London. In 2001 he famously publically destroyed all of his entire belongings in his performance-installation “Breakdown”, an examination, as Landy states, of society’s romance with consumerism. Landy’s work consistently provokes reaction and this exhibition is a chance to see why.
