CONCERT

Coloana infinita

Written 30 January

Friday 06 March, 20:00
SALLE OLIVIER MESSIAEN MAISON DE RADIO FRANCE, 75016 [map]

The opening concert of the Radio France Festival with work by Ligeti, and pieces directly influenced by his thinking.

Concert pianist Michael Levinas presents the world premier of his Radio France commission "Évanoui". Having studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under Messiaen, Levinas's work has developed from serialism towards the fantastic and theatrical - Levinas argues that all music tends towards the operatic.

Ligeti's piano studies, extracts of which will feature on the programme tonight, form some of the most significant repertoire to emerge for the instrument in the last twenty or so years. They draw on African polyphony, Gamelan, Bartok, Nancarrow and Jazzman Bill Evans to name a few aspects of the works.

Another Radio France commission for this evening: "Concerto pour deux altos et orchestre" by another son of the Conservatoire, Bruno Mantovani, whose "Violin Concerto and Turbulences" won the first prize of the City of Stuttgart contest of 1999.

Finally, Serge Nigg's 1970 piece "Fulgur", a work heavily steeped in serialism. Nigg, who died at the end of last year aged 84, was president of the Société Nationale de Musique and also of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
