The exhibition of Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo is that of turn of the century Montmartre. This mother-son “couple”, atypical and bohemian, is at the centre of the artistic world which spans two periods and two worlds, illustrating how impressionism, a bourgeois movement, would proceed through one of the most beautiful muses-Suzanne Valadon, and also that of L’Ecole de Paris with the most symbolic of artists, Maurice Utrillo. It’s also the story of the difficult passage of one époque of bourgeois artists to a new group of artists who came out of the more popular social categories. These “new” artists are sometimes also deep psychological cases, painfully living their condition as artists.
