Groupe Zorongo

Le Groupe Zorongo was created in 1989 with the aim of promoting Hispanic culture and theatre in France through performances and festivals. Since their first production, "Ay, Ay, Ay Lorcas" in 1990 at UNESCO and at the first Festival Don Quijote in 1992, they've gone on to form strong links with la Maison des Cultures du Monde, le Vingtième Théâtre, and le Théâtre National de Chaillot à Paris to name but a few.

Originally a film by Carlos Saura, "¡Ay Carmela!", presented here in its French translation, is testament to the success of contemporary Spanish theatre. It takes place during the Spanish civil war - Paulino and Carmela, two variety artists on tour in the republican zone end up in the nationalist controlled territory, where they are forced by military officers to perform a patriotic show in front of soldiers and republican prisoners. Zorongo's work pays homage to Spanish republicans and acts on the historical memory law passed last year in Spain.

Active since 1992, the fundamental aim of Festival Don Quijote is to identify and celebrate all cultures whose common language is Spanish.
