CONCERT

Grace Jones

Written 30 January

Sunday 22 March, 20:00
Le Grand Rex, 75002 [map]

One of the most unique and explosive characters to emerge from late '70s Studio 54 era NYC, Grace Jones started her life in the public eye as a model, before her striking, statuesque physique drew the attention of the nightclub scene, and she was offered her first recording contract with Island. Whilst commercial success initially evaded her, Jones became a near Goddess of the gay scene, her sexually charged disco stageshows gradually building a huge following. The big change came with the disco backlash of the early '80s, when Jones's switch to the edgier new wave sound made possible some of her most commercially successful songs to date ("Pull Up To The Bumper", Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing").

Massive Attack's London Meltdown Festival saw the return of Grace Jones, after she had spent the best part of 2007 in the studio with Ivor Guest producing her first album for commercial release in twenty years. Featuring Sly and Robbie, Tricky, Tony Allen, Brian Eno and Bruce Woolley amongst others, the new record has received considerable critical acclaim, and the touring hasn't stopped since.
