Sophie Hunger's first taste of success came in her home country of Switzerland, when her self-distributed debut recording, in combination with her increasingly popular live shows, provoked a flood of attention from press and fans alike. Two years later, her first commercially released studio album reached number one in the Swiss album chart, leading to a deal with Universal Jazz and a planned international release in 2009.
Hunger's bittersweet melodies and precocious turn of phrase is addictive, the stripped harmonies of her basic band constantly placating her sweet but, at times, slightly threatening vocals.
