CONCERT

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan

Written 30 January

Wednesday 03 December, 00:00
Le Trabendo, 75019 [map]

Screaming Trees front man and general man-about-grungetown Lanegan's two recorded collaborations with Belle & Sebastian cellist/singer Isobel Campbell are perfect pairings of rough and smooth, delicate and gruff, light and dark. That's not to say Campbell's contribution here is all the sweetness and twee pop dreams of here previous work - her 'cello playing on "Ballad Of The Broken Seas" forms some of the most mournful material of either record.

Latest oeuvre "Sunday at Devil Dirt" follows the same path as the previous work, though Campbell takes a lower profile route through the album, ceding much of the limelight to the Waits-esque grizzled blues of Gutter Twin Lanegan.

Expect a mixture of gravelly country covers ("Ramblin Man" and "Sand" were amongst the favourites last time round) and the pair's own work, with Campbell on multi-instrumental duties and vocal additions in support of Lanegan's storytelling.
