"Twenty years ago, when I visited Calcutta for the first time, I felt a strange feeling of déjà vu. At the time of British colonization, Calcutta had been kind of modeled on London at the time I was living there and I noticed on another continent a distant echo sent back through time and history. Since 2003, I’ve returned six times to India to finish “Red square”, a photographic project which attempts to reveal the complex emotions provoked by the encounter with this world so faraway and however profoundly linked to my cultural identity.

My idea was to capture the architectural traces of this colonial past before modernisation wipes everything. Following a first exhibition of this work in Calcutta, two years ago, I was contacted by Soumitra Das from the daily Indian newspaper, The Telegraph, to create a book. The scope of my project has been enriched and the image of a complex and fascinating history has begun to take shape". Christopher Taylor
