Since the end of the 60s, Ernie Gehr, one of the major representatives of the structural experimental film movement, of which many major retrospectives have been focused in Europe and America, has unceasingly interrogated the formal components of film (light, frame, projection) to make it the very material of the film, “Traditional avant-garde films, wrote Gehr in 1971, teach us to see in the film an image, a representation but the film is the real thing and in that it doesn’t reveal imitation. It doesn’t reflect the real; it’s a capsule of thought. It doesn’t transmit idea nor affect outside of itself: it is the activation of its own concept. The film is a variation of colour intensity, and an internal balance of time and movement in a given space.”
Still and Wait, two films by Gehr are showing this evening.
